Paragraph example

On page 287, we hear from Geraldine directly. How does the use of Geraldine’s voice contribute to the reader’s understanding of Geraldine, other characters and/or their relationships? Choose one aspect of what is revealed in this chapter and write a well-structured paragraph.

Topic sentence

Evidence

 Explanation

Concluding sentence
Through the use of Geraldine's voice, the reader gains a better understanding of Geraldine's attitude to Sophie, and is led to realise that Geraldine does care for her daughter and is devastated at her disappearance.

When the narrative voice tells the reader that "the anxiety headache was getting worse" (pg 291), it becomes clear that Geraldine is genuinely concerned about her daughter. This is also revealed through the use of Geraldine's voice, in italics, when she thinks, "My own daughter, only seventeen years old and I haven't spoken to her in a month..."(pg …).

Geraldine is clearly feeling both worried and guilty, and yet these are feelings that neither Fran nor Sophie would have attributed to Geraldine.

It is only through the use the use of Geraldine's perspective, giving the reader her own point of view that her anxiety for her daughter is revealed.

Remember:

Your topic sentence needs to be quite specific: in this case, explaining precisely what the better understanding is that readers gain. If you can't do this in one sentence, do the more specific explanation in a second sentence.

You need to introduce your quotations. Giving evidence does not mean that you go straight from topic sentence to quotation. Introducing your quotation means that you are actually using it as evidence for the reader.

You need to make the links between your evidence and the point in your argument for the reader. This should happen in both your explanation and your concluding sentence.

Formatting:

Don't start a new line within a paragraph.Your paragraph should look like this:

Detailed character study - Minh

Mihn
1.      How would others characters describe his character?
Sophie describes him as an attractive Asian guy, who is tall and skinny. "A long face with high cheekbones and worm brown eyes." (Pg 147)   He had very badly cut, jet black hair.
2.  How would you describe the relationships that his character has with others?
He has a very good relationship with Sophie, as he is attracted towards her. He also has a relationship with his older brother who was in jail, and he seems to be the only one in the family that doesn't hate him. His relationship with his family is quite average, much like other's, but does not like that they don't like their eldest son. His relationships with others are not mentioned.
3. How does this character change throughout the story? How would you describe him or her?

His character doesn't change at all in the story, however he keeps his relationship with Sophie even after the accident. His perspective changed on the Big Event, and he doesn't blame Sophie. He seems like a patient and loving person, who still has feelings for Sophie. This also shows that he is a forgiving person.
4. What key themes does this character help the reader to understand?
Some evident themes this character helps the reader understand are, the theme of teenage love, the theme of patience and the theme of forgiveness. Teenage love is shown very much in this story and it is very clear that Sophie is madly in love with him. The theme of patience is also shown because of the quote "I've been waiting for you." (Pg 389) This quote can also be used for the theme for forgiveness as it shows that he has forgiven her.
The plot helps the reader understand the feelings Mihn has for Sophie, even at the end of the book.

Detailed character profiles - Geraldine

Geraldine

*How would your character describe himself/herself?

Geraldine would describe herself as trendy, young and up to date with everything. She always needs to be in control of the situation and thinks people should live the way she desires. She feels as though she's doing what’s best for the person when really it isn't.

Geraldine would describe herself as being successful as she has a big house, doctor husband, two daughters and lots of money. Sophie at the start of the book would describe her mother as being a horrible, vain, jealous and a self-obsessed person, her sisters Fran and Monica would agree with this.  Sophie is quoted saying “at the time jealousy seemed to fit in well with the rest of my mother’s characters trait- she was obsessive, mean minded, controlling and vain… just to name a few.” but later in the book Sophie in her head is asked by Mr Schmidt if her mother is a horrible person where Sophie replies “I’ve portrayed her badly, I adore my mother.” This shows that Sophie deep down does love her mother but something has happened since being a teenager that has made her have this anger towards her.
* How would other characters describe this character? Try to include as many variations as possible and indicate why there might be differences between characters.

The words used but the other characters to describe Geraldine or when they are talking about her are quite nasty and very emotional showing that they have a problem with her. Monica thinks of Geraldine as being uninteresting. Fran doesn’t know what to make of Geraldine as she finds her very aggravating. This character does not have any positive relationships with other characters. Everyone at one time has been angry with her and find her hard to get along with. This character develops and so do her relationships with Sophie and Fran.

Sophie- Sophie describes her mum as very controlling and stuck up. She believes her mum is very selfish and speaks her mind, not caring the outcome.

Fran- Fran believes her sister is very rude to others, plain and boring. She thinks she's is also, very stuck up.

 * How would you describe the relationships that this character has with others?

Geraldine doesn't have a strong relationship with either Fran nor Sophie. She has cut herself off from the majority of the family and really only cares about herself. This is why the others have those strong feelings towards her. She hasn't got any strong relationships because she's so self-centred and everything seems to revolve around her.

The relationships get better and improve as they start to understand Geraldine better.  On page 327 we are shown another side to Geraldine and how much she cares for her daughter. Geraldine has just seen Sophie for the first time after her being with Fran. She says “Could I just… hold you for a minute…”  This sheds a light on the way Geraldine has been feeling about this situation with her relationship with Sophie. This gives us the impression that she has missed and cares deeply about Sophie. Since Sophie has been away, Geraldine has had time to reflect on their relationship.

* What key themes does this character help the reader to understand?

Geraldine’s role in the novel gives readers an insight into how this family functions and the tension between the characters. Most of the anger from characters is pointed towards Geraldine. Geraldine helps the reader understand how she tries to stay strong but deep down she has a lot of problems herself which we don't find about until towards the end of the novel. Before that we only get Fran's, Sophie's and one stage, Amy's view of her but we were never really in Geraldine's shoes.

Jimmy O’Brien
 - How does this character change throughout the story? How would you describe him or her?
When Jimmy was 19 he was absurdly handsome. “Six foot, his shoulders board and his waist slim.” (P29) in 1970 Jimmy went to the Vietnam War. And now these days when he was at the city “Jimmy’s marriage folded for good, he had a heart attack” which convinced him to go back to Ballingo for early retirement and now he owns a bar and has a daughter that goes to university and her name is Blue. He has put on some weight and he hair is streaked with grey and it is thick and wavy.

- How would other characters describe this character? Try to include as many variations as possible and indicate why there might be differences between characters.
Each character describes Jimmy in a different way, Fran for instance describes Jimmy as ‘ absurdly handsome ‘ with ‘ big, deep, blue eyes’ (page 29) from this description the reader realises that jimmy is very much a handsome brother that has everything going for him looks wise, later on in the text this view of jimmy is further establish by Geraldine when she talks as Jimmy as ‘so handsome’ (page  292) even thought he has just returned from the war. But the reader soon begins to realise that Jimmy has been broken in the war and even more after when his best friend Blue kills him self.  After this point jimmy is described as ‘fundamentally wreaked’ (page 313) by Geraldine and Fran describes him constantly as being broken. The reader never true finds out if Jimmy gets better but the text dose seem to indicate that he has been improving and so has peoples opinions of him.

Geraldine and Robert think that Jimmy is unstable and unsuitable and not a good influence on Sophie. This is shown on page 10 when Robert asks Fran to let him know that if Sophie begins, "spending a lot of time with jimmy... Or any other unstable...or unsuitable person."

On page 10, it is also stated that Geraldine was "mortified" by Jimmy's actions when he, "took himself off alone into the centre of the city with a loaded shotgun..." And was, "firing randomly into the bushes".

In the book, it is shown that Fran feels sympathetic towards Jimmy when people don't view  him in a positive light. Because of this Fran begins to feel as though she has to defend Jimmy in order to protect him. This is shown on page 10 when Fran states, "she'd often thought darkly that it was chief role in life: defending Jimmy". It is also shown that Fran loves Jimmy. This is shown on page 30 when she states that she, " simply adores ...

What key themes does this character help the reader to understand?
Jimmy helps the reader to understand Fran and Amy’s relationship and the relationship between Raymond and Fran.  Jimmy also has a big part in Sophie’s recovery and how she settles into Fran’s life.

Robert Douglas- Robert Douglas is Geraldine's husband. He works as a successful bowel surgeon and supplies his family (a wife, two daughters, and one son) with large amounts of money (page 1). He was supportive towards young Sophie when Geraldine refused to let her go to ballet classes (82-83), however, Sophie still does not like him.

Detailed Character profiles - Sophie and Fran

Sophie

How would your character describe himself/herself?

Toward the start, Sophie seems resentful and misunderstood. “The dragon, that bitch commonly known as my mother…” Sophie would describe herself as fat, unwanted, depressed, insecure and misunderstood. Sophie is extremely resentful toward her mother as seen above.

How would other characters describe this character? Try to include as many variations as possible and indicate why there might be differences between characters.

Fran first thought of Sophie as dead and surprised by how much weight she had put on. All characters seem to be superficial when they talk about Sophie’s weight gain. Fran states, “… she has put on so much weight and her face is so sullen. She looks dead.” Geraldine, Sophie’s mother, says to Sophie, “You are not good with people. Have no personality to speak of!” This resentment towards her daughter shows the conflict of personality between Sophie, Geraldine and Fran.

How would you describe the relationships that this character has with others?

I would describe Sophie as vulnerable and immature, although Sophie thinks she is just misunderstood. This is personified when Sophie, who has only known Mihn for one week, decides to pursue a sexual relationship with him. “I had become a mass of desire and longing.” (158)

How does this character change throughout the story? How would you describe him or her?

Sophie develops from a teenager to a young woman. She furthers her relationships with her family members and grows more confidence throughout the novel. The first time the new maturity shines is when she agrees to make pottery for the school fete. “It pleased me very much that she’d remembered.” For once, Sophie actually recognises and appreciates what someone has done for her.

What key themes does this character help the reader to understand?

Sophie’s insecurity is a key theme to help the reader understand how destructive insecurity is to teenagers. “I suppose I did feel like a fat disgusting dag, just sitting there at the computer.”

Fran

How would your character describe himself/herself?

Fran would describe herself as being an average person. She would down grade herself and make others look better. Fran does see herself as always being there for others and can't help it but put others problems before hers. Fran is the type of person that feels bad for saying no to things in life and is not happy unless everyone else is. “Why, why do I buy into all that stuff?” (P.6), this is moment where Fran is asking herself why can she never say no to helping people. “How come she still has all of that power over me?” (p.6), this is an example of where Fran shows that although her sister has blocked her out of her life for twenty years she can still control her and has power over her. This is more a guilt factor of what Fran did in the past and her feeling that she still needs to make it up to Geraldine. Lastly, Fran never loses touch with reality and has always believed that everything will turn out ok in the end.

How would other characters describe this character? Try to include as many variations as possible and indicate why there might be differences between characters.

Other characters would describe Fran as being very caring, cooperative and very good at helping others. Fran is also very creative and artistic and is the “normal/average” daughter in their family. Fran would be described as very down to earth and on par with reality. She knows that life has its struggles  and doesn’t take any thing for granted. “ I have to admit, to a tiny feeling of intense pleasure in all of this. Geraldine is having a struggle with her daughter… Wow Mrs perfect has come down to deal with the real world for once.” (p.93) This quote suggests that Fran does have a little bit of negative feelings towards other people and is not “perfect”. This also suggests that others think that she enjoys looking after others where all she really wants is her own space. “I see that she both looks like my mum, but doesn’t. Shes slim, but bigger than mum and fair skinned, but her hair has streaks of gray in it.” (P.71) This is how Sophie describes Fran when she first arrives in Ballingo.

How would you describe the relationships that this character has with others?
This character has a strong relationship with Amy and Sophie but is distant and awkward with her sister Geraldine. She only has a relationship with the ones that are true friends and have always been there for her. Fran only has a few close friends that she can trust, but that’s what she prefers. “Geraldine! Who hadn’t spoken willingly to her in twenty years.” (p.7) This quote tells the reader that Fran does not have a close relationship with her sister. Fran expresses that she trusts her brother as she states “I smiled ruefully, thinking that Jimmy was about the only person in the world who I would take that king of jibe from.” (P109-110). Amy also expresses that her relationship with Amy is very strong as she states “I had hardly even had to explain things to her, my soul mate since we were 12.” (P96)

How does this character change throughout the story? How would you describe him or her?
Fran’s relationship with Geraldine and Sophie are the major things that change throughout the novel. Fran and Geraldine were close sisters at the start of the novel, until Geraldine breaks up with Paul, and Paul kisses Fran. This is evident when Fran asks Paul “You told Geraldine that…her voiced dies away to a whisper. Told her you… loved me?” (p.59) This shows that Fran does care about both her sister and Paul, and is the start of the distance between Geraldine and Fran. At the beginning of the novel Fran hated the idea of having a teenager around her house and this soon changed as she got to know Sophie and built up a strong relationship with her. She found that her and Sophie had many similarities and that they could relate to each other in many situations. This similarity is expressed when Sophie and Fran are talking and she says “But I was remembering dad telling me the story when  I was only 17 and it somehow seemed sad to be telling another 17 year old from the next generation.” (P101)

What key themes does this character help the reader to understand?

Fran helps the reader understand that relationships between people can change, progress and go down hill, but at the end of the day family will always be there for you. This is evident when Geraldine writes Fran a letter saying “At the time I envied you, your do-gooding instincts but lately I began to think that, seeing you did it so well with dad, then you might be able to help Sophie.” (P114) She also gives the reader an understanding of the different types of relationships that humans can have and how they are dealt with.
